sage roll at the Great Australian Pie Competi-

period by an elite team of 16 judges from the bak-

met Section including Red Meat, Poultry, Game,
Seafood, Vegetarian, Gluten Free, Breakfast and
Apple. 2014 saw the first Official Great Aussie
Sausage Roll competition added.
The competition has always generated a lot of
media coverage throughout newspapers, maga-
zines, radio and television which enables winners
to reap the rewards. Due to these benefits, the
competition has consistently increased its entry
levels since conception.
It’s well known that winning medals at this
highly regarded event can be paramount in the
promotion for every bakery. Now in its 26th year,
this competition has on many occasions turned
small pie producers into million dollar businesses

are to provide a national platform for quality pie
improvement, product innovation and skill en-
hancement, while providing a platform to gain
maximum media exposure for pies and pie mak-
ers in their battle for a share of the fast food dol-

“We wanted to make something different,
something gourmet,” Mr Kelly said.
Kelly’s Bakery has won medals in all but
one of the 18 Great Australian Pie Competitions
it has entered.
The bakery is located in Commercial Street,
Korumburra, and has a delectable range of
cakes and memorable coffee too.

THORNTON’S Bakery in Leongatha was
rewarded for dishing up delicious pies af-
ter placing in the Great Aussie Pie Compe-
tition held last week
The McCartin Street bakery received a silver
prize for its chicken parma pie and bronze for both
its pizza pie and egg and bacon pie.
The pizza pie and egg and bacon pie also won
awards in the 2015 competition while the chicken
parma pie made its star début.
“The competition is held between Melbourne and
Sydney every year. This year ’s was in Melbourne,”
bakery owner Darren McInnes said.
With over 1000 entries, Thornton’s Bakery had
to ensure consistency in the taste, weight and ap-
pearance of each pie to secure a placing.
“Next year we are definitely going to have a
crack at winning a gold prize,” Mr McInnes said.
Customers can be assured every pie purchased

Thornton’s has been very busy with its winter
trade for pies, but with footy finals both locally
